The NoteTakingApps API

Every rating on this site is public JSON. 40 apps, 82 tracked features, 9 categories and 29 guides, with no key to request and no rate limit to respect.

Endpoints

The site is a static export, so each endpoint is a flat JSON file on a CDN. Fetch as often as you like. Every document carries the same envelope, with the resource name, the API version and the date the data was last checked.

  • /api/index.jsongetApiIndex

This document: every endpoint, with counts.

  • /api/apps.jsonlistApps

All 40 rated apps, highest score first.

  • /api/apps/{slug}.jsongetApp

One app in full: scores, pricing, pros, cons and every tracked feature.

  • /api/categories.jsonlistCategories

The 9 shortlist categories and which apps are in each.

  • /api/features.jsonlistFeatures

The 82 tracked features, grouped, plus the four support levels.

  • /api/guides.jsonlistGuides

The 29 guides, by audience and by device.

Start with /api/apps.json, which is the whole directory ranked, then fetch a single app by its slug for the per-feature breakdown. Slugs are stable and they are also the last segment of the review URL, so /apps/obsidian and /api/apps/obsidian.json are the same app.

Reading a score

Every app carries six scores out of 10 and one overallScore, which is their weighted average and the number to rank on. The weights and what each axis measures are on how we rate. Feature support has four levels rather than two, so read the legend below before you treat a key in the features map as a yes.

  • yesBuilt in and shipped by the app itself.
  • partialThere, but limited, awkward or missing a piece.
  • pluginOnly through a community plugin or an add-on.
  • noAbsent. Anything left out of the data counts as this.

Files for agents

  • OpenAPI 3.1 specification

/openapi.jsonEvery operation with an id, a description and a response schema. Drop it into a tool caller as is.

  • llms.txt

/llms.txtWhat is on the site and when an agent should reach for it, in the format at llmstxt.org.

  • llms-full.txt

/llms-full.txtAll 40 apps with scores, prices and verdicts in one plain-text file, for reading in a single fetch.

  • Sitemap

/sitemap.xmlEvery page on the site, for a crawler that would rather start from a list.

Terms

Use the data, including commercially. The one thing we ask is attribution: name NoteTakingApps and link back to https://notetakingapps.com wherever the numbers appear. Do not present the scores as anyone else's ratings, and keep the check date with them, since a price from last year is worse than no price.

Two limits worth knowing before you build on it. There is no write access of any kind, and because the whole site is static, a request for a path that does not exist is answered by the HTML 404 page rather than a JSON error body, so read /api/apps.json for the list of valid slugs instead of probing for one.
